The Toronto Blue Jays came agonizingly close to a World Series title this season, missing out by just one run against the Los Angeles Dodgers. As the offseason begins, the team faces a pivotal moment that could define its future.
Star shortstop Bo Bichette is entering free agency and is projected to command a deal approaching $200 million. According to analyst Joel Reuter from Bleacher Report, Bichette could be on his way to the Detroit Tigers if Toronto does not act decisively.
“The Detroit Tigers were a popular speculative landing spot for Alex Bregman last offseason, but their biggest addition ended up being Gleyber Torres on a one-year, $15 million deal,” Reuter wrote. “As he gets set to depart for what will likely be a multi-year deal this winter, the Tigers could again make a run at signing Bregman, but another infielder might be an even better fit.”
Reuter highlighted that Bichette, who turns 28 in March, bounced back from a difficult 2024 season to regain elite offensive form. His impressive 2025 numbers — a .311/.357/.483 slash line with 44 doubles, 18 home runs, and 94 RBIs over 139 games — make him one of the premier targets in the market.
While Toronto undeniably wants to retain their franchise cornerstone, matching or exceeding a $200 million offer may prove challenging. The coming months will determine whether Bichette remains the centerpiece of their lineup or moves on to Detroit for a lucrative contract.
Bo Bichette’s stellar 2025 rebound has positioned him for a massive free-agent payday, likely testing the Blue Jays’ willingness to spend beyond their comfort zone.
