Edie Falco on Playing a Female Superhero

Edie Falco expressed interest in playing a female superhero, describing it as an enjoyable new challenge. Known for her Emmy-winning roles in The Sopranos and Nurse Jackie, Falco thrives on portraying complex, multi-dimensional characters.

“Never have I said I can’t do that. You sort of find a way you can go and see, because you’re able to know you have to stop before it is dangerous. And I’ve been in therapy for 7,000 years.”

She seeks roles that offer complexity, finding simpler characters less engaging. Falco explained, “I look for those [complicated characters]. That’s what makes this exciting. To play someone with a less complicated life is less interesting.”

Career and Character Range

At 62, Falco feels fortunate to have portrayed a wide variety of intricate female characters. She believes she has benefited from the evolution of female roles over time.

“I’ve been very lucky that kind of since I started working, female characters are getting more interesting and complicated, I feel like I’m riding this wave of really interesting and complicated female characters.”

Falco also noted how avoiding early typecasting helped her career. “I imagine if you’re only ever playing young, beautiful, sexy women, it’s going to get harder as you get older,” she said.

Future Roles

Looking ahead, Falco is intrigued by the potential to portray a political figure, joking about exploring that side of herself.

“Maybe I can get something out of my system.”
