Veteran center David Kampf has temporarily stepped away from the AHL’s Toronto Marlies as he evaluates his next career move. During the offseason, the Toronto Maple Leafs explored trade options for him, but no deal was completed.
Subsequently, Kampf was placed on waivers during training camp and, after going unclaimed, was assigned to the Marlies. This development was unexpected given that general manager Brad Treliving signed the 30-year-old to a four-year, $9.6 million contract just over two years ago.
Initially, Kampf was expected to continue anchoring the fourth line, showcasing his strength in faceoffs and penalty killing. However, under coach Craig Berube, his responsibilities were reduced, and lower-cost players have since filled his spot on the Maple Leafs’ active roster.
This season, Kampf has appeared in only four of seven games with the Marlies. He did not travel with the team to Chicago, and according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, the forward “is taking a couple of days to ponder his future.”

In recent years, several players have chosen to walk away from guaranteed contracts in pursuit of a better opportunity or a return to the NHL. Conor Sheary, Brandon Saad, and Filip Zadina are among those who made similar decisions. Kampf might be considering a comparable path, though doing so would mean forfeiting over $3 million remaining between salary and bonuses.
David Kampf is pausing his AHL season to reflect on his career after a surprising demotion, potentially following other veterans who left secure deals seeking NHL opportunities.
