Marco Penge has had an exceptional year on the DP World Tour, securing victories in three tournaments. Currently, he stands second in the Race to Dubai rankings, 500 points behind Rory McIlroy.
This week, Penge will compete alongside Rory McIlroy for the first time at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship held at Yas Links. The 27-year-old Englishman expressed his excitement about the opportunity, highlighting McIlroy's influence on his generation.
“I actually did ask him in Ireland a couple of months ago to get a practice round at some point but haven’t crossed paths and timing’s not worked out,” said Penge. “For me, he’s the best player of my generation. He’s been so successful, and I think many guys my age really look up to him, not just as a golfer but as a person.”
Penge added that he often compares aspects of his game to McIlroy’s and looks forward to testing his own strengths against one of the world’s best.
“I’m excited to see what I think my strengths are compared to him on Thursday and learn where I can improve.”
Just last season, Penge narrowly kept his tour card after finishing 110th in the Race to Dubai standings. Shortly after, he served a three-month suspension for betting on golf. However, this season has marked a stunning turnaround in his career.
These victories have propelled him to 29th in the world rankings and second in the Race to Dubai, closing in on McIlroy.
After a rocky past season, Marco Penge’s resurgence on the DP World Tour highlights his talent, resilience, and admiration for Rory McIlroy as both a competitor and role model.
