China’s 42nd Antarctic expedition has departed from Shanghai, embarking on a seven-month voyage aboard the icebreakers Xuelong and Xuelong 2, also known as Snow Dragon and Snow Dragon 2.
The mission includes more than 500 researchers and members from over 10 countries and regions. Their aim is to deepen scientific knowledge and strengthen efforts in environmental protection and sustainable utilization of Antarctic resources.
“The team will conduct a wide range of scientific investigations in the polar region to enhance understanding, protection, and utilization of Antarctica,” said Long Wei, deputy head of the Chinese Arctic and Antarctic Administration.
The Qinling Station, which officially began operations in February 2024, serves as an important hub for future Antarctic research and logistical support.
The 42nd Chinese Antarctic expedition, involving global cooperation, aims to bolster polar research and infrastructure during a seven-month mission aboard dual icebreakers.
