Jay Som is the creative project of Melina Duterte, a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer. Her upcoming album Belong is set for release on November 7.
Before the album’s release, Jay Som unveiled the track “Past Lives,” featuring Hayley Williams of Paramore. The collaboration took place in Nashville, where Duterte and Williams worked with producer Steph Marziano.
“It’s a dream come true to have Hayley sing on my first feature on an album before the recording of ‘Float.’ I still can’t believe it happened,” Duterte shared. “She’s one of the kindest artists out there and she graciously uplifts everyone around her.”
Williams’ soft harmonies in “Past Lives” enhance the song’s emotional depth—evoking a cycle of drifting through melancholy, regaining strength, and then watching it fade again. The dynamic midsection adds a sense of inner conflict and reflection, giving the song both power and tenderness.
Belong features contributions from Joao Gonzalez (Soft Glas), Mal Hauser (Mk.gee, Illuminati Hotties), Steph Marziano (Vundabar, Hot Wax, Sir Chloe), and Kyle Pulley. The album also marks the first time Duterte has invited guest vocalists to join her recordings.
The album will be released via Polyvinyl Record Co.
Jay Som’s collaboration with Hayley Williams on “Past Lives” blends dreamlike introspection with emotional strength, setting the tone for her forthcoming album Belong.
