Watching sports online has never been easier — unless you’re a dedicated fan who wants to catch every game of your favorite team. While more sports content is available than ever, being a sports fan has become increasingly complicated, as demonstrated by the recent YouTube TV blackout of Monday Night Football.
The blackout was caused by an ongoing dispute between Disney and YouTube TV. On October 30th, ESPN and several other Disney networks disappeared from YouTube TV due to disagreements over carriage fees. Both companies have rejected each other’s financial demands, leaving YouTube TV’s roughly 10 million subscribers unable to watch Monday Night Football this week.
Some fans turned to alternative services like Hulu Live or Fubo, signing up for free trials to catch the games. However, not everyone is willing to jump through hoops. Former NFL star JJ Watt, who played for the Houston Texans for nearly a decade, expressed his frustration on X:
“Just frustrating. All of it.”
Watt added:
“I’m not paying for another streaming subscription.”
The sports streaming landscape is more fragmented than ever, making it harder for fans to access all the games they want without jumping between multiple platforms and subscriptions.
