England national team manager Thomas Tuchel clarified why Lewis-Skelly was left out of the squad for the upcoming matches against Serbia and Albania. Despite being a valued squad member, Tuchel emphasized that the young defender must gain more regular playing time.
So far this season, Lewis-Skelly has played only 87 minutes in the Premier League, all from substitute appearances. While he has contributed two assists in the EFL Cup and one in the Champions League, Tuchel wants him to be more than a peripheral squad member.
"Myles was a very good team-mate and played for us in the last camp in the World Cup qualifier in Riga, so was Ruben Loftus-Cheek, so was Morgan Gibbs-White," said Tuchel, as quoted by Sky Sports.
"But I said last time there is a component to it and that is about competition and performance and the door is always open for guys who perform on a high level regularly."
"Myles, Ruben and Morgan got out-performed by O'Reilly, Alex Scott and Jude Bellingham in their positions. Myles simply needs more starts, more minutes."
Tuchel highlights the need for Lewis-Skelly to secure consistent playing time to compete effectively for his place in the England team.
