Thousands of customers still wait for refunds months after Air Canada strike

Thousands of Air Canada Customers Still Await Refunds Months After Strike

Almost three months after a labour strike grounded Air Canada flights for three days, many affected customers remain unpaid. Among them is Lynda Elstad, who spoke to us while boarding another Air Canada flight this month. She was directly impacted by the August disruption.

Air Canada’s Refund Promises

Air Canada pledged to reimburse customers for expenses incurred from booking on other airlines and for cancellations, including costs for food and accommodation. However, delays persist.

“But they (Air Canada) seem to be waiting and waiting,” Elstad said.

Financial Burden on Customers

Many customers covered these costs using credit cards. Gábor Lukács, President of Air Passenger Rights, highlighted the growing concern.

“That means those who incurred those expenses are paying tens of percent in interest charges on their credit cards, which is making it profoundly troubling.”

Legal Obligations and Delays

Lukács emphasizes the airline’s delay is not just inconvenient but illegal. He explained the law requires airlines to respond to such complaints within 30 days, which should also include payment.

“The law is clear and an airline has to respond to these complaints within 30 days and I would find that response also means payment as well. You cannot take four to six weeks after you respond to remit payment.”

Author's summary: Air Canada’s delayed reimbursements caused financial strain for customers, violating legal deadlines and prolonging hardship months after the strike.
