The Montreal Canadiens are currently facing challenges, but the players and management aim to remain calm to steer the team in the right direction. Samuel Montembeault emphasized the importance of not panicking despite the difficulties.
“Obviously, the job of management and the players is not to panic. Everyone has to stay calm in order to right the ship. That’s how the players see it,” says Samuel Montembeault.
Despite the current struggles, Canadiens’ GM Kent Hughes may still consider strategic moves to improve the team. Given the situation, it is natural for the management to explore potential player changes.
Elliotte Friedman highlighted Alexandre Texier as a player worth monitoring. Texier, a 6'1" winger, has played only one game since October 28 and might seek to exit his contract, similar to what David Kampf did. His contract pays $2.1 million annually, and he is a restricted free agent in 2026.
“Elliotte Friedman wonders if Alexandre Texier could do what David Kampf did, i.e. get out from under his contract and look elsewhere.”
Friedman mentioned this in his recent segment "32 Thoughts," noting that the Canadiens are the only team explicitly mentioned in relation to Texier. Although Texier would not play alongside Nick Suzuki, his arrival might still offer some benefits to the team.
Currently, bigger names are less likely to be available due to contract complications and teams' reluctance to trade key players. Smaller targets might provide realistic changes for the Canadiens.
For example, Pierre LeBrun noted interest in Blake Coleman from the Calgary Flames, although his $4.9 million annual salary through 2027 makes a trade uncertain. Coleman brings depth and experience as a two-time Stanley Cup champion with Tampa Bay.
Other notable players include Nazem Kadri, highly valued by the Flames, and Jonathan Marchessault, whose salary is challenging to absorb. Non-trade clauses, like those held by Jordan Kyrou and Steven Stamkos, also complicate potential moves.
The Canadiens' strategy seems focused on balancing realistic acquisitions with financial and contractual patience rather than pursuing big stars aggressively. Depth additions and smaller scale moves might be the path forward in this challenging period.
“I have the feeling that the player's profile is attractive.”
The Canadiens remain calm amid struggles, with GM Kent Hughes eyeing strategic moves like monitoring Alexandre Texier’s contract situation to improve the team's depth and future prospects.
