ANU Report Quantifies Climate Impact of Woodside's Scarborough Gas Project

A recent study by the Australian National University (ANU) has put a number on the climate impact of Woodside's $19 billion Scarborough gas project.

The research, published in the npj Climate Action journal, directly quantifies the project's climate impact for the first time, attributing nearly 0.0004 degrees of additional global warming to the project's emissions over at least 31 years from 2026.

The consequences would be great, said report lead author Professor Sarah Perkins-Kirkpatrick, despite the number appearing small.

Woodside has argued that it is not possible to pin rising temperatures on one operation, but the ANU report challenges the claim that emissions from the project will be "negligible".

The study's findings are significant, as it is the first time researchers have quantified the impacts of individual projects on climate change.
