Micro-Dramas in China: A $7bn Industry

Micro-dramas have become a significant phenomenon in China, with 90-minute films being broken down into engaging one-minute episodes available online.

The first few episodes are made available for free, while viewers have to pay to watch the rest, with prices going up to $30 per drama, through an app.

A growing number of these micro-dramas are AI-generated videos, with one series, Nine-Tail Fox Demon Falls For Me, gaining over 200 million views in just a month.

"The micro-drama market in China pulls in $7bn annually. It’s already bigger than their domestic box office,"

according to Adrienne Lahens, a former TikTok executive, who spoke at the MIPCOM conference.

She highlighted the success of micro-dramas, citing the example of Nine-Tail Fox Demon Falls For Me, a fully AI-generated series.

Author's summary: Micro-dramas are a booming industry in China, worth $7bn annually.
