Closed-Loop System for Medical Plastics Recycling

Coveris and SABIC have implemented a closed-loop system, recycling used medical plastics into new device packaging for Zuyderland Medical Centre.

An estimated 1,700 kilotonnes of non-contaminated polyethylene and polypropylene medical waste are incinerated annually, despite being technically recyclable.

The partners argue that sterility and patient safety standards, while important, often hinder the implementation of circular solutions.

In 2024, Zuyderland Medical Centre started recovering its non-contaminated plastic waste, which would otherwise be incinerated, to be recycled into new contact-sensitive packaging for shipping guidewires.

Coveris and SABIC report that they are recycling Zuyderland Medical Centre’s medical plastic waste into new contact-sensitive packaging.
