The Victorian Liberals have pledged to dismiss the state's landmark Treaty legislation within 100 days if they win government at the next election in 2026.
Shadow minister for Aboriginal affairs, Melina Bath, stated that instead of the Treaty, the Liberals would establish a First Nations advisory body separate to the First Peoples' Assembly of Victoria.
We are happy and willing to always listen to leaders in our community, in our Aboriginal communities, but this policy will be about across the board, listening to all voices, not just the First Peoples' Assembly.
The Treaty bill, introduced last month, formally recognises the First Peoples' Assembly, now known as Gellung Warl, as the permanent representative and deliberative body for Traditional Owners and First Peoples in Victoria.
