Recent wet weather has caused water levels to rise, eliminating the need for water pumps at Lake Cowichan's weir.
Brian Houle, environment manager at the Domtar Crofton mill, stated that the wet weather has significantly impacted water levels in Cowichan Lake, cancelling plans to pump water over the weir.
After a severe drought in the summer of 2023, Domtar used 20 pumps for over a month to sustain water levels in the river.
This year, the wet weather has avoided the need for such measures.
Author's summary: Water pumps are not needed at Lake Cowichan due to rising water levels.
