A fire at a New York Novelis aluminum plant on September 16 is expected to temporarily impact automakers, particularly Ford.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Ford is cutting production of five models due to supply interruptions. Novelis aluminum accounts for 36% of the global market supply to the automotive industry, as reported by Supply Chain Dive.
Automakers might have to shift current aluminum supplies between models, depending on customer demand.
Stephanie Brinley, associate director of AutoIntelligence at S&P Global, made this statement to Supply Chain Dive. The affected plant, located in Oswego, New York, is Novelis' first U.S. operation and largest wholly-owned fabrication facility in North America.
The fire is likely to cause disruptions to the aluminum supply for automakers into next year.
