I Have Developed An Unexpected And Revelatory Bond With My Car | Defector

My Unlikely Bond With My Car

I have never been enthusiastic about my car. My first car, a 2000-something Geo Prizm, was given to me by my aunt when I was 15 and remained with me until I moved to New York City at 24.

It served me through high school, college, and the initial two years of my post-graduate life, despite receiving minimal care from me. At one point, the power steering failed, and a mechanic discovered that I had inadvertently punctured the steering column, causing all the power steering fluid to leak out.

I told him I would just drive it like that.

My current car, a 2014 Subaru Impreza, has received similar neglect and complaints. I drive it as sparingly as possible.

Author's summary: Forming a bond with my car was unexpected.
