Researchers Identify 4 Antiviral Drug Candidates for COVID-19

A team of researchers screened over 250,000 drugs and natural compounds to find the ones that stop viral replication the most.

Currently, there are only three antivirals authorized by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treating COVID-19. If the SARS-CoV-2 virus develops resistance to any of them, treatment options will be severely limited.

The researchers' search identified four potential candidates for COVID treatment, as reported in ACS Infect.

The effectiveness of one of the drugs is in question, and another’s efficacy hasn’t yet been pinned down.

Author's summary: Researchers identify new COVID-19 treatment options.
