Importance of Set-Pieces in FPL
This season has seen a notable increase in the proportion of goals scored from set-pieces, prompting the question: are set-piece takers and recipients of dead-ball deliveries more crucial than ever?
A review of the last 10 full Premier League campaigns reveals that set-piece goals have generally fallen within the 200-250 range per season. The highest number of set-piece goals was recorded in the 2016/17 season with 255, while the lowest was 197 in the 2020/21 season, which also saw a decline in overall goals.
Expressed as a percentage of total goals, set-piece goals have accounted for around 20-21% of the total in recent years, slightly lower than in the earlier part of the last decade. However, the current season has seen a spike in this percentage.
