A lot has happened since Houston football last went bowling three years ago. Former head coach Dana Holgorsen was relieved of his duties in November 2023, after a tumultuous season where the Cougars underachieved, finishing 4-8 and missing a bowl appearance for the first time since 2019.
Houston sought a leader to transform them from a conference competitor to a contender. The search led to Tulane's coach Willie Fritz, who had led the Green Wave to 12-2 and 11-3 seasons in 2022 and 2023, respectively, after a 2-10 finish in 2021.
The Cougars were looking for someone to lead them back to bowl eligibility.
