New research from BCG and Columbia Business School highlights the AI adoption gap, revealing that executives are disconnected from the reality of AI strategy and adoption within their organizations.
A recent event showcased the findings, indicating that executive leaders are 51 percentage points more likely than individual contributors to believe employees are well-informed about AI strategy (80% vs 29%). Moreover, they are 45 points more optimistic about employee enthusiasm (76% vs 31%).
These gaps pose significant challenges, particularly in AI adoption, where fear and opportunity coexist. The research notes that organizations experience wide variation in adoption, with technology companies and engineering functions often being heavier adopters, but not universally so.
The higher you climb, the more disconnected you become—and that disconnection is fueling the gap between AI’s potential and its actual impact.
