International Students' Scholarship Contracts to be Tightened

Following the recent scandal at ELTE, thousands of international students in Hungary may face tightened scholarship contracts.

A lecture by Alexander Yakobson, a historian from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, was disrupted on October 16, leading to its suspension. The lecture series, titled "Diverzitás és demokrácia az izraeli társadalomban", is still available on ELTE's website.

The disturbance began when some students, wearing keffiyehs, shouted that the lecture was political propaganda supporting Israeli genocide. Despite efforts to calm the situation, the lecture was halted.

Two ministers and the university rector have demanded accountability in response to the incident.

The incident has sparked concerns about the freedom of speech and academic integrity in Hungarian universities.
