More than ten years after the tragic death of five-year-old Michael Komape, who fell into a school pit toilet, many schools in Limpopo still lack proper sanitation facilities.
A recent investigation by GroundUp found that some schools in the Ga-Mashashane area, west of Polokwane, continue to rely on pit toilets, while others have filthy and broken toilets, including Enviro Loos in disrepair.
In one school, teachers were found to be urinating behind bushes due to the lack of functional toilets.
Teachers and learners in parts of Limpopo are still battling poor sanitation, despite official promises to eradicate pit toilets.
