Sink Holes Reappear in Khayelitsha
Families in the SST section of Town Two, Khayelitsha, have been forced to vacate their homes due to sink holes opening up beneath their shacks.
The cause of the sink holes is a collapsing sewer line, according to reports. However, the City of Cape Town is unable to access the sewer line unless the residents are relocated.
Community leader Mzikazi Twani has reported eight such incidents recently, with residents experiencing a terrible stench when the ground opens up.
- A resident, Zizipho Captain, reported that her neighbour fell into a hole, shouting for help as he sank.
- Gcobani Caphu, a grade 10 learner, said a sink hole opened up in his shack on Saturday night, causing his tiled floor to fall inwards.
We heard him shout to us that he was sinking.
Residents are fearful for their children's safety due to the sink holes. The issue was previously reported on by GroundUp in January 2024.
