Canadian yellow peas hit with India’s new 30 per cent tariff on all imports

Canadian Yellow Peas Face New Tariff in India

Canadian yellow pea producers are now facing tariffs in both major export markets, China and India.

India has announced a new 30% tariff on all imported yellow peas, effective November. This comes after China imposed a 100% tariff on Canadian yellow peas in March, reportedly in retaliation for Canada's tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles.

Ottawa needs to immediately negotiate with India.

Saskatchewan's Agriculture Minister, Daryl Harrison, emphasized the urgency of the situation, citing that India and China together comprise 71% of pea exports. Saskatchewan alone exported $480 million in peas to India in 2024.
