Alexander "Zander" Bowles, a resident of East Lansing, has been a regular attendee at East Lansing City Council meetings, providing advice on making city facilities more accessible.
Zander's interest in city government began when he attended a city meeting for class credit. He has since become a mainstay at City Council meetings, advocating for improved accessibility in the city.
Zander, who has cerebral palsy, a neurological condition affecting movement and posture, uses a power wheelchair and a special device to communicate with others.
"It means his muscles are not working the way ours do, and some of his muscles are constantly firing," his dad, Ryan Bowles, said. "His body is always working harder even though he’s in a wheelchair."
Zander's efforts have brought greater accessibility awareness to the local government.
