The Familiarity of a General Store

A visit to the BCMA to see the Gordon Parks exhibit sparked a reflection on the significance of general stores in Maine.

The exhibit featured a set of photographs centered on a quaint general store, which drew the author in and made them think about the role of such stores in building community.

Community isn’t necessarily about town meetings or Facebook groups but is derived from the places that sell us coffee, eggs and a sense of belonging.

The author recalls their first experience with a general store, Hope General Store, which they would visit barefoot with friends during summer break, feeling independent and enjoying treats like greasy pizza, delicious brownies, and unbeatable iced tea.

The author still buys Little Lad’s popcorn, a snack they discovered at Hope General Store, to this day.

Author's summary: General stores foster a sense of community.
