Shutdown won’t slow down cleanup at old J.H. Baxter site in Eugene

Shutdown Won't Halt Cleanup at Old J.H. Baxter Site

The federal government shutdown will not impact cleanup operations at the former J.H. Baxter wood treatment plant in Eugene.

The plant, which closed in 2022 after nearly 80 years of operation, had been the subject of complaints regarding noxious odors and elevated dioxin levels in nearby yards and gardens.

"Baxter is funded with fiscal year 2025 funds and activities will continue,"

said Alice Corcoran, an EPA Region 10 spokesperson. The EPA has designated the plant a Superfund site, ensuring years of continued removal of heavy contaminants.

Cleanup operations, including the removal of the tank farm, will continue until the end of the year.
