The Orioles are set to sign free agent outfielder Leody Taveras, pending a physical, according to reports by Mike Rodriguez. The team has not officially confirmed the signing yet.
Seattle designated Taveras for assignment in mid-June. After clearing waivers, he was sent outright to Triple-A Tacoma. The Mariners had claimed him off waivers from Texas in early May, but Taveras elected free agency a few weeks ago.
Taveras spent five major league seasons with the Texas Rangers, debuting in 2020 as a part-time player. His early years showed limited offensive production but showcased strong center field defense and speed on the bases.
In 2023, Taveras expanded his role, playing 143 games and accumulating 554 plate appearances. He posted a .266/.312/.421 slash line with 14 home runs and 14 stolen bases.
Despite maintaining a significant role in 2024, his offensive numbers declined, hitting just .229 with an 84 wRC+ over 529 plate appearances. However, he stole a career-high 23 bases that season.
Before the 2024 season, Taveras qualified for arbitration due to his Super Two status. He and the Rangers agreed on a $4.75 million contract for 2025, but luxury tax concerns sparked trade rumors. Despite this, Texas retained him, although his performance at the plate deteriorated.

Taveras's signing with the Orioles could provide him a fresh start.
