Los Angeles Lakers forward Rui Hachimura revealed he was unaware of Austin Reaves until Reaves famously crossed up Giannis Antetokounmpo in 2023. Since then, Reaves has significantly stepped up, particularly this season without LeBron James and Luka Doncic in the lineup.
Reaves, originally undrafted and signed by the Lakers in 2021, has flourished into an All-Star caliber player. After averaging 20 points last season, he reached new highs with a 51-point game, followed by a 16-assist game, including a crucial game-winning shot.
“I am not gonna lie, three years ago when I got traded here, I honestly didn’t know about him before,” Hachimura said. “He was injured I think that time. And I think he came back on a game against Milwaukee. I think I remember, he made a move on Giannis around the top and he made a layup. I am like, ‘Oh OK, he got it, you know?’”
In 2021, under coach Frank Vogel, Reaves played as a scrappy guard providing energy to a veteran roster that included LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and Russell Westbrook. His role was more supportive, focusing less on scoring, but his skills rapidly evolved.
Austin Reaves transformed from an unknown undrafted player to a key Lakers star, impressing teammates like Rui Hachimura with his standout performances and growth.
