Edna Smith Burgess, affectionately known as "Nanny," passed away peacefully at home on November 1, 2025, at the age of 94. She dedicated her long life to her family and those she cherished.
Nanny was born on May 7, 1931, to Ben Tillman Greer and Lena Hellener Wood. She was the youngest of thirteen siblings, all of whom predeceased her.
Nanny is survived by her son Van Smith, daughter Dianne Mattox (married to Pastor David), as well as "Mama Edna" to Mark Smith, Pam, and Jill. She leaves behind 8 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, 13 great-great-grandchildren, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Known for her strength, faith, and compassion, Nanny faced life's challenges with resilience. She enjoyed simple pleasures like swinging on the front porch, picking pecans, working on puzzles, and playing with children.
Her quilts were more than just blankets; they were her expressions of love that will continue to comfort many generations to come.
Her love and guidance spanned five generations, and she will be dearly missed.
