During the Mass on the Solemnity of All Saints, marking the conclusion of the Jubilee of the World of Education, Pope Leo XIV proclaimed Saint John Henry Newman a Doctor of the Church. The ceremony in Saint Peter’s Square gathered thousands of faithful, including many students and educators.
Pope Leo XIV described Newman as a master of the theory and practice of education, calling him a model for anyone devoted to teaching and learning. He emphasized that Newman inspires people to share the “Kindly Light” of faith in Providence, echoing his well-known hymn.
“Disarm the false reasons for resignation and powerlessness, and transmit light and guidance in this present time, darkened by so much injustice and uncertainty.”
Addressing educators and students, Pope Leo XIV urged them to ensure that schools, universities, and all educational spaces—even informal or street-based ones—serve as gateways to a civilization rooted in dialogue and peace.
Pope Leo XIV presented Saint John Henry Newman as an enduring guide for educators, whose faith and wisdom illuminate the path toward a world of understanding, justice, and peace.
