The Houston Rockets received encouraging contract news as they confirmed the team options for two of their young guards. The deadline to finalize rookie contract options fell on Friday, and both Amen Thompson and Reed Sheppard will remain key parts of Houston’s rotation.
According to Danielle Lerner of The Houston Chronicle, the organization exercised the third-year option for Thompson and the second-year option for Sheppard. This move keeps both players with the team through the 2026–2027 NBA season, unless a trade occurs.
Though Houston picked up Thompson’s option, he is expected to pursue a long-term deal next offseason. This approach mirrors how the team handled Jabari Smith Jr.’s extension after exercising his option the previous year.
With point guard Fred VanVleet sidelined, both Thompson and Sheppard have expanded their responsibilities in the lineup.
After four games, the Rockets rank 19th in the league in defensive rating (116) but hold the top offensive rating at 125.2, showing strong early-season form on the offensive end.
