Antonio Brown, formerly of Central Michigan University and the NFL, has been arrested on attempted murder charges related to a shooting in Miami.
The charges arise from an event that took place on May 16, following a celebrity boxing match in Miami's Little Haiti neighborhood. After shots were fired, Brown was briefly detained.
Brown stated on social media at the time: “I was jumped by multiple individuals who tried to steal my jewelry and cause physical harm to me.” He added, “Police temporarily detained me until they received my side of the story and then released me. I WENT HOME THAT NIGHT AND WAS NOT ARRESTED.”
Later reports from the AP indicated that Brown was named in an arrest warrant. He was accused of taking a handgun from a security staffer and firing two shots at a man with whom he had a prior physical altercation. Investigators were told that one bullet grazed the victim's neck.
Miami Police Chief Manuel Morales confirmed that Brown was arrested in Dubai and transported to Newark, New Jersey, where Miami PD took custody. Brown is awaiting extradition to Miami to face charges.
Morales said: “Let this serve as a clear message; no matter who you are or where you run, we will pursue the facts, identify you, locate you, and bring you to justice.”
Antonio Brown’s arrest highlights law enforcement’s commitment to pursuing justice regardless of a suspect’s status or location.
