Sussan Ley has declined to address direct criticism of her leadership, asserting instead that the Liberal Party remains unified. This comes despite one backbencher’s claim that the Coalition leader is losing confidence within the party.
The Coalition is preparing to settle an internal dispute over emissions targets and finalize its energy policy platform in the coming week, following months of internal tension that have tested Ley’s leadership.
On Friday, Liberal Senator Sarah Henderson refrained from publicly endorsing Sussan Ley. When asked by Sky News if she supported Ley continuing as leader of the opposition, Henderson hesitated before responding:
“I am just going to say at the moment that I cannot support the way things are.”
The remark highlighted growing uncertainty within the Liberal ranks about the direction and cohesion of the party.
Speaking to reporters in Canberra, Ley said she would not comment on speculation surrounding her leadership.
“I value every single member of my team, including Senator Henderson,”
she stated, adding that journalists should question Henderson directly if they wanted clarification on her views.
“I’m not commenting on commentary.”
Ley emphasized that the Liberal Party remained unified by its shared values despite the internal disagreements.
Despite mounting doubts among colleagues, Sussan Ley insists the Liberal Party stays united as she faces renewed scrutiny over her leadership.
