Liberal senator makes extraordinary comment about leader Sussan Ley

Liberal senator questions Sussan Ley's leadership

Liberal senator Sarah Henderson has expressed uncertainty about whether the Coalition can recover under Sussan Ley’s leadership. Her comments come as the party seeks to resolve its stance on net-zero emissions after weeks of internal conflict and leadership speculation.

Henderson, a former frontbencher who lost her position in the shadow cabinet after Ley assumed leadership, admitted she could no longer support the party’s current direction ahead of an upcoming meeting.

"I do have to say really honestly, I do think Sussan is losing support," she told Sky News on Friday. "But I do believe in miracles."

When asked if the Coalition could turn things around with Ley at the top, Henderson paused before adding that she could not continue endorsing the current situation.

"I'm not in the business of throwing anyone under the bus, I'm stating the bleeding obvious, we are in a dire situation," she said. "The infighting has been terrible and I'm terribly sorry about what's been going on in the Liberal Party."

Despite her criticism, Henderson praised Ley’s decision to convene multiple meetings to develop the party’s energy and climate policies, calling it a meaningful step forward.
