Remembrance Day Events in Niagara-on-the-Lake

As Remembrance Day approaches, communities across Canada, including Niagara-on-the-Lake, prepare to honour the soldiers who fought and continue to fight to protect the country. This respect spans from the First and Second World Wars to present-day conflicts.

Poppy Campaign and Displays

Local businesses are distributing poppies, which residents wear proudly as a symbol of remembrance. Poppy displays have been set up at key locations such as the Niagara-on-the-Lake Museum, the Historic Court House, the RiverBrink Art Museum, and the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 124 on King Street.

The museum began its poppy drive in October and has placed 75 poppy wreaths around the heritage district.

Legion’s Role in Commemorations

Al Howse, president of the legion, noted members have been actively preparing for the upcoming ceremonies. The legion's poppy drive started on October 11, involving street collections and distribution of poppies in the community.

“We accept donations at that time for our poppy trust fund to support veterans and their families,” said Howse.

He mentioned that poppies are available at 200 businesses, with thousands already distributed.
