One of the top organizers of the Miss Universe pageant issued an apology on Wednesday after several contestants walked out in protest following his harsh criticism of Miss Mexico earlier this week.
At a livestreamed event on November 3, pageant executive Nawat Itsaragrisil, co-owner of the organization, publicly reprimanded Miss Mexico contestant Fátima Bosch for not participating in promotional activities supporting the host country, Thailand.
“You don’t like to post everything because your director from Mexico ordered you to not pay any attention, to post about the host country? If you follow the orders from your national director, you are dumb,” said Itsaragrisil.
Bosch responded firmly, stating that Itsaragrisil was not respecting her as a woman.
“I’m here representing my country and it’s not my fault that you have problems with my organization,” she said.
When Itsaragrisil called security to remove Bosch, several contestants, some wearing sashes and gowns, stood up and walked out in protest. Among them was Victoria Kjær Theilvig, the 2024 Miss Universe winner from Denmark.
“This is about women’s rights.”
Nawat Itsaragrisil apologized after his public reprimand of Miss Mexico led to a protest walkout by contestants defending women's rights and respect.
