AtkinsRéalis Group Inc. (TSX: ATRL), a leading engineering services and nuclear company, has been chosen by Hydro One Networks Inc., an Ontario-based utility with nearly 10,000 employees, for a multi-year Owner’s Engineer role. The project involves expanding the Bowmanville Switching Station.
The substation, located opposite the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station, will be upgraded to support the grid connection for four Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) planned by Ontario Power Generation (OPG) at the nearby Darlington New Nuclear Project site.
“Delivering nation-building energy projects in Canada and around the world has been a hallmark of our work in the Power & Renewables sector for decades,” said Ian L. Edwards, President and CEO of AtkinsRéalis. “Our sector has been involved in marquee projects globally, supported by our centre of excellence in Canada. AtkinsRéalis is perfectly suited to deliver work on this substation, which is a critical link in supplying electricity from the Darlington New Nuclear Project to the people of southern Ontario, including Toronto.”
The region’s increasing electricity needs are driven by population growth and key factors such as the expansion of electrified rail transport, reflecting southern Ontario’s role as Canada’s largest regional economic hub.
Summary: AtkinsRéalis was selected by Hydro One to expand a key substation that will connect four new SMRs to Ontario’s grid, supporting southern Ontario’s growing electricity demand.
