‘Death by Lightning’ Review: Michael Shannon Leads a Rollicking Elegy for the American Experiment

Recounting the assassination of James Garfield, Death by Lightning is a Netflix series fueled by a lively cast, sharp humor, and insightful storytelling.

Plot and Characters

In the early morning hours, the recent Republican nominee for Vice President of the United States, portrayed by Nick Offerman, stumbles out of a noisy bar. With two hats stacked on his head and eyes squeezed shut, he is unable to see the wall in front of him. His only way home is a ride granted by a supporter whom he repeatedly mistakes for “Cousteau.”

Charles Guiteau, played with a captivating intensity by Matthew Macfadyen, has been persistently talking to Arthur all night. He turns an act of accidental kindness — Arthur’s intervention to prevent Guiteau’s arrest — into a true opportunity. Guiteau is eager to join Arthur’s campaign. Inspired by James Garfield (Michael Shannon), who leads the ticket, Guiteau aspires to “make an impact” like his future president.

To escape his past, filled with thefts, debts, and lies spanning Illinois to New York, Guiteau is ready to adopt a new identity.

"You see, Guiteau wants to work on Arthur’s campaign. Back in Chicago, he was inspired by the top of the ticket, James Garfield (Michael Shannon), and now he dreams of 'making an impact' just like his future president."
