Dozens of Calgary police officers, transit peace officers, and social agency workers gathered in the city’s downtown core on Wednesday as part of a coordinated enforcement operation.
Calgary Police Chief Katie McLellan, in her first major public effort since assuming office earlier this year, announced Operation Order. The initiative targets crime and social disorder in key downtown areas including East Village, Stephen Avenue, and Century Gardens.
“Enough is enough,” said McLellan, emphasizing the need for decisive action.
One of the first individuals fined was Grant Robinson, who received a $120 penalty for discarding a cigarette butt.
“This is gonna stop me from probably another month because I have to pay it,” Robinson said. “I won’t be able to save money because I have to give the government money.”
Reporters accompanied officers as they patrolled back alleys and transit platforms, capturing the on-ground enforcement efforts.
Operation Order marks a firm stance by Calgary authorities to reduce downtown crime and improve public safety through collaborative enforcement and support services.
