Former India batter Robin Uthappa shared insights about Jasprit Bumrah’s bowling during the second T20I match against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Uthappa suggested that Bumrah tends to lose his usual rhythm when trying too hard to take wickets.
Uthappa, who was part of India’s T20 World Cup-winning squad, noted that Bumrah's rare off day appeared linked to his desperation to make an impact during India's defense of a modest total of 125 runs. Speaking on Star Sports, Uthappa explained that when Bumrah becomes eager for early wickets, his discipline sometimes falters.
“When we were bowling after scoring 125, the start was very important. If we had picked up two or three wickets in the first three or four overs, the game could have been closer because we have quality spinners in the middle overs. I felt we were probably trying too hard to pick up wickets. So we got a little wayward.”
Although Bumrah took two wickets and conceded only 26 runs in his four overs, Uthappa felt he was not at his usual composed best during the game. India were bowled out for 125, and Australia chased the target quickly, securing a 1-0 lead in the series.
Uthappa emphasized that Bumrah’s occasional inaccuracy is often a result of his eagerness to strike early rather than a lack of skill.
“The pacer's occasional waywardness often stems from his eagerness to strike early.”
This observation highlights the balance bowlers must maintain between aggression and control to be effective.
Robin Uthappa highlights that Jasprit Bumrah’s occasional loss of rhythm during crucial moments stems from his intense desire to take early wickets and influence the game's outcome.
