Gainesville — Florida’s 7-foot-9 center Olivier Rioux finally stepped onto the court, marking a milestone as the tallest player ever to appear in college basketball. His debut came in the Gators’ 104–64 victory over North Florida.
As the game’s outcome was already decided, a crowd of over 10,000 began chanting his nickname, calling out, “Oli, Oli, Oli.” Head coach Todd Golden responded to the fans’ energy, sending Rioux in with just over two minutes left to play at the O’Connell Center.
“It felt great,” said the 19-year-old Canadian. “The support from everybody was amazing. Even on the bench and even with the fans. I’m very grateful.”
Though Rioux did not score or collect a rebound, his brief appearance made history. He surpassed Kenny George, who stood 7-foot-7 and played for UNC Asheville from 2006 to 2008.
“It’s another day, I guess,” Rioux said, known across campus as a friendly giant often approached for photos or a chat.
His teammates celebrated the moment, especially fellow big man Micah Handlogten, who stands 7-foot-1.
“So much fun,” Handlogten said. “When he was checking into the game, I kind of stopped him and told him, ‘Play with confidence.’”
