Millions in Firing Line of More Wild Weather

Millions of Australians along the country’s east coast are preparing for another round of severe storms and heavy rain this weekend, following an already turbulent start to the storm season.

Storms Expected Across Several States

Late thunderstorms and strong winds are expected across Sydney on both Friday and Saturday, following warm daytime temperatures. The Bureau of Meteorology has warned that much of southeastern Australia faces several “unsettled days” due to a developing cold front.

“Today (Friday) we are looking at the possibility of thunderstorms all the way from southern Victoria across to South Australia and up into northern parts of NSW,” said Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Jonathon Howe.

Howe noted that northern Victoria and northwestern New South Wales could experience damaging wind gusts on Friday afternoon, while storms may also affect Melbourne, Adelaide, Canberra, and Sydney.

Severe Weather Threatens Broader Regions

“Severe thunderstorms are possible through the day for the northwestern slopes of NSW, into southern inland Queensland and a large swath across Central Australia,” Howe added. “For these areas, we could see damaging wind gusts with thunderstorms as we head into Saturday.”

He also warned of potential heavy rainfall, damaging winds, and large hail from Wollongong through Sydney, Newcastle, the Hunter Region, the Mid North Coast, and into central Queensland.
