Long-term use of melatonin supplements to support sleep may have negative health effects

Long-term Use of Melatonin Supplements Linked to Negative Health Effects

A review of five years of health data involving over 130,000 adults with insomnia who used melatonin supplements for at least one year revealed an increased likelihood of heart failure diagnosis, hospitalization due to heart failure, and higher mortality rates.

Study Overview

This preliminary study, scheduled for presentation at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions 2025 in New Orleans, found a correlation between chronic insomnia patients using melatonin and elevated risks related to heart failure and overall death. The event, held from November 7–10, showcases the latest scientific breakthroughs and clinical updates in cardiovascular health.

Melatonin’s Role and Usage

Melatonin is a hormone produced naturally by the pineal gland that regulates the sleep-wake cycle by increasing in darkness and decreasing with daylight. Synthetic melatonin supplements, chemically identical to the natural hormone, are commonly used to treat insomnia and jet lag.

“Long-term use of melatonin supplements was associated with a higher risk of heart failure diagnosis, heart failure hospitalization and death from any cause in chronic insomnia.”

The findings suggest caution in prolonged melatonin supplementation, especially among individuals with chronic sleep disorders.

Author’s Summary: Extended melatonin use may increase heart failure and mortality risks, highlighting the need for careful evaluation of its long-term safety in insomnia treatment.
