New country to join Abraham Accords: US envoy - World News

New Country Set to Join Abraham Accords

The United States plans to announce the addition of a new nation to the Abraham Accords on November 6, according to President Donald Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff. The accords are a framework through which several countries have normalized relations with Israel.

"I'm flying back to Washington tonight because we're going to announce, tonight, another country coming into the Abraham Accords,"

Witkoff shared this news at the America Business Forum in Miami. When pressed by Fox News journalist Bret Baier to identify the country, he replied:

"I don't know if it's out yet."

Axios reported that the country in question is Kazakhstan, a Central Asian republic that has maintained diplomatic relations with Israel for many years. The report suggested that Kazakhstan’s move aims to help reinvigorate the accords. The country's president is among five Central Asian leaders expected to meet Trump at the White House in November.

Background on the Abraham Accords

During Trump’s first presidential term in 2020, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, and Morocco formally established diplomatic ties with Israel under the Abraham Accords. The initiative marked a significant step toward broader peace in the Middle East.

Saudi Arabia’s Position

Saudi Arabia had engaged in discussions with the United States about potential normalization with Israel, which would be highly symbolic given the kingdom’s custodianship of Islam’s two holiest sites. However, after conflict erupted in Gaza following Hamas's October 2023 attack, Riyadh paused the normalization process. The Saudi leadership has maintained that rapprochement with Israel is not possible without tangible progress toward an independent Palestinian state—a position opposed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Author’s Summary

The U.S. plans to expand the Abraham Accords by welcoming Kazakhstan, signaling renewed diplomatic activity in the Middle East under President Trump's leadership.
