US President Donald Trump expressed optimism on Friday about the possibility of meeting again with Russian President Vladimir Putin, following the sudden cancellation of their planned summit in Budapest last month.
Speaking at the White House while hosting Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Trump explained the Budapest meeting was called off because he doubted it would produce any meaningful results.
"That meeting, it turned out I didn't want to do that meeting because I didn't think anything was going to be happening of significance," said Trump.
In the Cabinet Room, Trump indicated the Russians were hesitant to end the ongoing issues.
"The reason the sit-down did not materialize is because the Russians don't want to stop yet," he said. "I think they will. I think it's taken a big toll on Russia, big toll on both countries, obviously, but it's taken a big toll."
When asked if Budapest would remain the preferred venue for a future meeting with Putin, Trump confirmed his preference.
"I'd like to keep it in Hungary, in Budapest. But if we have it, I'd like to do it in Budapest, yeah, it'd be good."
Trump and Putin last met on August 15 in Alaska and initially chose Budapest for follow-up talks after consultations between their senior diplomats.
Author’s summary: President Trump remains open to a future meeting with Putin in Budapest, though the previous summit was canceled due to doubts over its potential impact and Russia's reluctance to de-escalate tensions.
