Edgar Wright, director of The Running Man, shared an intriguing Easter egg involving the Brolin family in the film, adding a hidden layer with significant meaning. Warning: This contains spoilers for Stephen King's The Running Man novel.
Josh Brolin stars as the villain Dan Killian in this Stephen King adaptation. Wright revealed in an interview with ScreenRant's Ash Crossan that the connection goes beyond Josh himself.
“Josh Brolin is not the only Brolin in this movie. By complete coincidence, his dad is in it as well,”
The director explained that having both Josh Brolin and his father, James Brolin, in the movie was purely accidental. James was actually cast before Josh.
James Brolin’s presence appears through a clip from the older film Skyjacked, where he played the hijacker. This clip was integrated prior to Josh’s casting as Killian.
“So we wrote that in. We got the clip cleared — and this was all before Josh Brolin was cast as Killian. And then when Josh Brolin was cast, I suddenly said to him, ‘Hey, your dad’s in the movie too,’ because James Brolin plays the hijacker in Skyjacked.”
Edgar Wright cleverly included James Brolin’s role from an earlier film as an Easter egg, creating a layered family connection that adds depth to The Running Man.
