Prime Minister Mark Carney has openly stated that his Liberal government views the dismantling of Canada Post in its current form as a testing ground for broader attacks on the rights and conditions of all workers.
Daniel Berkley, a postal worker and a leading member of the Postal Workers Rank-and-File Committee, commented on the situation. Those wishing to contact the committee can email [email protected] or use the form provided at the end of the article.
According to multiple media outlets, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) appears close to finalizing an agreement with Canada Post that would result in major concessions, undermining jobs and working standards across the service.
Negotiations resumed on Monday, November 3. In its latest statement, CUPW expressed satisfaction with the support of a government-appointed mediator and emphasized its willingness to reach a final deal.
“We are prepared to overcome the disagreements between the parties and secure ratifiable collective agreements at the bargaining table.”
In a secondary release, the union appealed to the pro-corporate Liberal government—whose policies have endorsed plans to cut nearly two-thirds of Canada Post’s 55,000 employees—
“to ensure that any decisions are made with Union input.”
The Liberal government’s push toward privatization of Canada Post, combined with a potentially concessionary union deal, threatens the stability and livelihoods of thousands of postal workers.
