John Swan, known as Swanee, 73, is the older brother of famous musician Jimmy Barnes and the pioneer in their musical family. He has openly discussed his past struggles, including trauma and drug use, as well as his relationship with his siblings.
Swanee has always been close to and proud of his siblings, never feeling threatened by any rivalry. He explained,
“Not many people touch on it, and I think they're just polite.”
He also said,
“I didn't really give a stuff, because I got offered the gig before he did.”
Swanee initially stayed as a drummer in his band because he was earning "$25 a week" and couldn’t afford to quit. He was surprised when he heard Ian Moss and Steve Prestwich joining forces. Although he joined Jimmy Barnes' band as a singer six months after its formation, he soon realized his time was limited, stating,
“I’m smart enough to realise that this band doesn't need me.”
After leaving the band, Swanee launched a successful solo career and played with other groups. He notably replaced Angry Anderson in The Party Boys and achieved a number-one hit with them.
Swanee paved the way in his family’s music legacy, overcoming personal struggles while forging his own career distinct from his famous brother’s shadow.
